After the lousy comeback performance last year, Spears will star at this year’s Video Music Award.

Although Britney will not be performing, she will be opening the 25^th annual MTV ceremony hosted by British comedian Russell Brand.Spears is nominated for her latest single “Piece of Me” at three categories: Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year. After being nominated before 17 times and never won, she hopes now to walk away with a “Moonman”.

“MTV has long played an important role in my career,” said the singer. “How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs? I’m excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated.”

After two failed marriages and two stints in rehab, Britney tried to launch her singing career by going back in the recording studio this summer, working on a new album. MTV refused until Wednesday to say if she will perform or not, making the most of the suspense surrounding her possible return to the VMAs.

The MTV awards will air live this Sunday at Paramount Studios in Hollywood at 9 p.m. E.T. and will include performance from Kanye West, Christina Aguilera and Rihanna. The show will also feature live performances by Pink, Paramore, Lil Wayne and Kid Rock.
